Retinal is showing up in more skincare formulas than ever, but choosing one is not as simple as finding the highest percentage.
A 0.05% retinal cream can make far more sense for a beginner than a 0.2% treatment, while someone already comfortable with retinoids may want something stronger or more targeted.
These six products stand out because they offer genuinely different options, from a gentle starting point to high-strength, K-beauty and premium formulas.
If you are still deciding whether retinal makes sense for your skin, our guide to retinal vs retinol explains the difference first.

How I Chose These Retinal Products
I looked at the retinal concentration, delivery system, supporting ingredients and how easy each formula is to fit into a real routine.
I also wanted every product to have a clear purpose.
There is no benefit in recommending six similar retinal serums when one person needs a gentle starting point and another is looking for something much stronger.
Best Overall: Peach & Lily Retinal For All Renewing Serum
Best for: A balanced retinal formula with extra attention to skin-barrier support.
Peach & Lily combines 0.1% encapsulated retinal with ectoin and a lipid blend that includes Ceramide NP, AP and EOP, cholesterol and phytosphingosine.
That is why it takes my Best Overall spot.
The retinal concentration is meaningful, but the formula is not built around intensity alone. The surrounding ingredients make it especially appealing if you want an effective retinoid without choosing a stripped-back high-strength treatment.
Peach & Lily makes very strong claims about tolerability based on its own testing. I would interpret those as product-specific results rather than a promise that retinal cannot irritate your skin. It still can.
Keep in mind: At 0.1%, I would introduce it gradually rather than treating it like a basic hydrating serum.

Best for Beginners: Naturium Retinaldehyde Cream Serum 0.05%
Best for: Someone using retinal for the first time.
Naturium’s 0.05% Retinaldehyde Cream Serum is probably the easiest product on this list to recommend to a cautious beginner.
The fragrance-free formula uses sustained-release retinaldehyde, and Naturium says its microencapsulation system helps protect the retinal from degradation. It also comes in a generous 50 ml bottle.
The 0.05% strength gives you somewhere sensible to start rather than immediately jumping into one of the more intensive formulas below.
Naturium also offers stronger 0.10% and 0.15% versions, so there is room to move up later if you actually need to.
Keep in mind: Lower strength does not mean zero chance of dryness or redness. Start slowly.
If retinoids are completely new to you, our retinol guide for beginners covers how to introduce them without unnecessarily irritating your skin.

Best High-Strength Budget Option: The Ordinary Retinal 0.2% Emulsion
Best for: Experienced retinoid users who want a stronger retinal without a premium price.
The Ordinary’s formula contains 0.2% retinal, making it the highest-strength option in this guide with a clearly disclosed retinal concentration.
The brand itself describes it as a high-strength formula for people who already have experience with retinoids. It recommends starting once weekly and gradually moving to twice weekly as tolerated.
That distinction matters.
Its low price can make it look like the obvious entry-level choice, but someone completely new to vitamin A would be better served by Naturium.
Keep in mind: Do not choose 0.2% simply because it costs less. This is a stronger treatment, not a beginner bargain.

Best Korean Option: celimax The Vita A Retinal Shot Tightening Booster
Best for: Fine lines, uneven texture and visible pores.
Celimax combines 0.1% retinal with 3% Matrixyl peptide complex and 1% panthenol in a small targeted booster.
What makes it different is the brand’s A-Shot technology, which uses very fine particles in the formula. Celimax says this is designed to help deliver the treatment more effectively, although I would view the more dramatic performance claims as brand testing rather than guaranteed results.
The formula itself is still interesting even without those claims: a clearly disclosed 0.1% retinal concentration plus peptides gives it a strong place in this category.
Keep in mind: Celimax notes that a slight tingling sensation can occur. I would not make this my first choice for very reactive skin.

Best for Blemish-Prone Skin: Paula’s Choice CLINICAL PRO Retinaldehyde Dual-Retinoid Treatment
Best for: Fine lines combined with breakouts, congestion or uneven texture.
Paula’s Choice uses 0.1% calcium-encapsulated retinaldehyde plus 0.16% Adapinoid®, an oil-soluble retinoid ingredient the brand uses to target blemishes and congestion.
That makes this the most interesting option here if your concerns go beyond wrinkles.
Instead of adding several separate retinoid products for aging and blemishes, you get both approaches in one formula.
It is also fragrance-free, which is a plus for a treatment that is already quite active.
Keep in mind: This is a dual-retinoid formula. I would not layer another retinol or retinal product over it.
If you want something simpler and gentler, our best retinol products for beginners may be a better place to start.

Best Premium: ISDINCEUTICS Retinal Advanced
Best for: Someone willing to pay more for a sophisticated multi-active formula.
ISDINCEUTICS Retinal Advanced is a dual-phase night serum combining retinaldehyde, bakuchiol and topical melatonin with a soothing phase that includes niacinamide. The two phases remain separate in the packaging and are mixed when you apply the product.
ISDIN does not publicly state the retinaldehyde percentage on its US product page, so this is not the product to choose if comparing formulas purely by concentration.
What you are paying for is the complete formulation.
ISDIN has also conducted product testing on 34 women with photoaged skin, but those results are brand-generated and should be viewed in that context rather than as a guarantee of what everyone will experience.
Keep in mind: It is considerably more expensive than the other options here, and you do not know the exact retinal percentage.

How to Choose
If you have never used retinal, I would start with Naturium 0.05%.
For the best balance of retinal strength and barrier-supporting ingredients, Peach & Lily is my overall pick.
If you already tolerate retinoids and want something stronger without spending much, The Ordinary 0.2% makes more sense.
Choose Celimax if you specifically want a K-beauty retinal formula, and Paula’s Choice if blemishes and congestion are part of the picture.
ISDIN is the premium choice for someone more interested in a sophisticated multi-active formula than chasing the highest retinal percentage.
How to Use Retinal
Use retinal at night and introduce it gradually.
For most people, starting once or twice per week and increasing only when the skin stays comfortable is a safer approach than immediately using it every night. Always follow the specific instructions for the product you choose.
A simple routine is enough:
Cleanser → retinal → moisturizer
Avoid stacking multiple retinoids in the same routine, and be careful about introducing strong exfoliating acids at the same time.
Daily sunscreen matters too. If you are using retinal for fine lines, uneven tone or photoaging, protecting your skin from further UV damage is just as important as the treatment itself.
Our guide to the best anti-aging ingredients that actually work explains where retinal fits into a complete routine.
Topical retinoids should also be avoided during pregnancy.
The Bottom Line
For most people, Peach & Lily Retinal For All Renewing Serum offers the best overall balance of a meaningful retinal concentration and a supportive formula.
If you are new to retinal, I would choose Naturium 0.05% instead.
Experienced users who want more strength for less money should look at The Ordinary 0.2%, while celimax is my K-beauty pick.
Paula’s Choice makes the most sense when blemishes and uneven texture are part of the problem, and ISDIN fills the premium spot for someone who wants a more complex formula and does not mind the price.
The main thing is not to buy retinal based on the biggest percentage.
Choose a strength your skin can tolerate, introduce it gradually and give it enough time to work.
